Summary/Abstract: Reading comprehension for multilingual people, which refers to their ability to effectively understand and interpret written texts across different languages, represents a complex cognitive challenge involving various cognitive processes and reading strategies to facilitate and enhance comprehension. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive theoretical overview of reading strategies, such as cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies, and their impact on comprehension, explaining how each of them contributes to effective reading comprehension by multilingual readers. The paper also examines how factors such as linguistic distance, proficiency levels, and cultural context influence the selection and effectiveness of reading strategies. It emphasizes the complex relationship between a readers’ linguistic background and their use of these strategies, pointing out that more proficient multilingual readers typically demonstrate greater flexibility and effectiveness in their strategy use. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of the educational institutions and teaching methods in developing strategic reading skills, stressing the importance of customized approaches that address the specific challenges experienced by multilingual readers. This review may have theoretical implications for learners and teachers in the process of learning or teaching reading strategies.
