Summary/Abstract: The construction of a railway line to Zamość by the Austrians during the Great War, and its sub-sequent extension through Werbkowice and Hrubieszów to Volodymyr-Volynskyi, opened a newchapter in the history of the town. Thanks to the railway, Zamość was able to develop economicallyin the interwar period and reduce the backlog in industry and production which lasted almosta century. High hopes were associated with the presence of the railway. A new group appearedin the social structure of Zamość – railway men, for whom there was initially a lack of companyaccommodation. The construction of the station led to further investments – the organisation ofloading points and a shunting yard including several sidings leading to storage areas and industrialplants, including a power plant. The geographical location of Zamość predisposed it to serve asa junction at the intersection of the planned north-south and east-west main lines. These planswere not implemented before the outbreak of World War II. However, in the social sphere, the rail-way became a window to the world. The people of Zamość were finally able to travel in comfortableconditions to Warsaw, Lublin, and Lviv, among other places.
