Summary/Abstract: The article analyses three short stories by Lyudmila Ulitskaya [Wax Duckling (Восковая уточка),Granddad Whisperer (Дед-шептун) and Nails (Гвозди)] whose protagonists are children. Theirearliest life experiences, emotions and relationships influencing the formation of identity, are at thecentre of the writer’s attention. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the role that objectsplay in the formation of characters’ identities. Ordinary objects take on an extraordinary qualityin children’s eyes and evoke strong emotional reactions: curiosity or desire. These emotions play animportant role in children’s lives, as they initiate the process of becoming aware of one’s own self.Intense emotions mark the beginning of the transition from childhood to adulthood. The contextfor the analysis is provided by Ulicka’s other texts, in which the author addresses the issue of man’srelationship with things.
