Summary/Abstract: Jorge Luis Borges and Danilo Kiš’s anti-nationalist positions – Kiš's rejection of Sartre’s art engagé and Borges' defense of an apolitical conservatism in the prologue to El informe de Brodie (1970) – are closely related to their poetics. Kiš references Borges's work constantly, adopting some of his devices, strategies, and positions. Despite these similarities, their poetics differ, as do the sociopolitical contexts of their works: Kiš often starts from Borgesian premises but uses them to construct an argument that validates his own poetics. I will begin by highlighting some central aspects of their different poetics and then analyze Kiš’s essayistic references to Borges that legitimize his own work.
