Summary/Abstract: The author elucidates the principal aspects of domestic weaving in Samokov when it was at its height in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. He traces the organization and special features of the activities connected with domestic weaving in the town which lies in the foothills of the Rila Mountains: the means and materials for the production process, the natural dyes used, the forms in which the fabrics produced were used in the home and in the tailoring industry. The extensive and exceptional labour-consuming character of the production process is elucidated. The extent to which the production of fabrics for barter developed is emphasized and the high ethical basis of relations between producers is brought out. The opinions and impressions of eminent persons of the epoch are cited on the state of domestic weaving in Samokov, its development and also the development attained by the tailoring and braid-ranking industries.
