The Image of the Virgin Mary in the “Parthenomelica” Songbook

Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes Advent songs, mainly Marian ones, edited by the Vilnius poet Walenty Bartoszewski. Most of them are well-known medieval and 16th-century songs. Yet, Bartoszewski’s collection is the first printed songbook of the Vilnius Catholic community. The author has categorized the songs according to genres, indicated possible sources Bartoszewski would have used, and presented the motifs, tropes and symbols used to outline the image of the Virgin Mary.
