The Ban on the Pentecost Fair at the Benedictine Abbey on Łysa Góra (Święty Krzyż) in the Light of the Privileges Granted by King Casimir IV Jagiellon of 1468

Summary/Abstract: One of the more interesting documents concerned with the history of the Łysa Góra Benedictine Abbey from Święty Krzyż in the Middle Ages, particularly the inner life of the monastery and the relations between the monastery and outer world, is the privilege granted by King Casimir IV Jagiellon of 1468, which moved the Pentecost fairs from the neighborhood of the Łysa Góra Abbey to the nearby Nowa Słupia. The paper is devoted to the analysis of that document, particularly the attempt to answer the question about the reasons for moving the fair. Previous research has not accounted for that clearly enough. Interpretations have vacillated between criticism of the obsolete pagan folklore of Pentecost celebrations, and Benedictine objection to the bothersome noise of the singing and dancing at the fair. The author is inclined to conclude that there were several reasons for moving the event, the major one being the internal reform of the monastery, a need to calm down and draw away from the abbey the distracting noise, play, dance, fights, quarrels and any other enormitates et deordinaciones incompliant with the dignity of the festival whose proprium was reconciliation and harmony, spiritual concentration, meditation, finally updating the calendar in connection with changing the name of the abbey from the Holy Trinity to the Wood of the True Cross.
