Summary/Abstract: Towards the end of his short life, the distinguished Bulgarian linguist Dimitar Tilkov (1933–1981) turned his attention to the in-depth analysis of the process and outcomes of standardization in the Bulgarian context. The part of his monograph that he managed to put down in writing deals with the theoretical foundations of this analysis. Although Tilkov’s views remained little known during his lifetime, the recent recovery of the typewritten text predating the work of other Bulgarian scholars and published here demonstrates that his frame of reference on issues of language norms, standard languages, style, variation and codification, was in concert with what was later to become mainstream. This publication aims to amend the history of linguistic thought in Bulgaria and to enable us to give credit where credit is due.
