The Category of Potentiality (Simple Conditional Mood) in Modern Bulgarian Today

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents and arguments the author’s views on the meaning of the category potentiality (simple conditional mood) in modern Bulgarian. All its forms are commented on. Different opinions on the origin, meaning and forms of the simple conditional mood are reviewed. The types of uses of the simple conditional mood in electronic corpora of the Bulgarian language and on the internet are monitored and analyzed. The arguments and data presented corroborate the thesis that the simple conditional mood is a viable and regularly used category in Bulgarian and that it is a category distinct from both the analytical conditional mood (eventuality) and evidentiality.
