Summary/Abstract: Nurses are the largest professional group in the health care system and have the most direct contact with patients, and the care they provide is one of the components of health services that significantly affects patient safety. The action of nurses is imperative for the adoption of safe practices and better health care. The aim of the research is to examine the role and importance of nurses in relation to work experience. Descriptive cross-sectional study included health professionals from the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the teamwork domain of the patient safety perception questionnaire (Safety Attitudes Questionnaire -SAQ) were used. The survey included 791 nurses employed in the public health sector, who are in direct contact or interaction with patients, with at least one year of work experience. 569 (78.4%) respondents were female and 157 (21.6%) male, average age 40 years (40.36±5.51). A statistically significant difference was found in all domains, with the best scores for respondents at the beginning of their working career. Patient safety was assessed with an average score of 3.20±0.74. Assessing and measuring patient safety is an important indicator of strengths or weaknesses in a healthcare institution, and at the same time a starting point for planning and undertaking activities and measures for improvement. Theoretically, it is known that the mission and vision of institutions, that is, the safety of patients, should be developed based on all factors of the safety climate. By examining the attitudes of nurses about the importance of safety standards and following protocols, it is possible to create a picture of the current situation that speaks of the implementation of regulations in the field of patient safety.
