Summary/Abstract: Groundwater contamination with hexavalent chromium is a significant and long-term threat to the environment and human health, as Cr(VI) is a persistent, mobile, toxic, and carcinogenic pollutant. Reducing Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III) is a crucial step in its efficient removal from the aqueous solution. This study successfully used nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) for Cr(VI) reduction in an aqueous solution. The results showed that the studied material is an efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly solution for the remediation of contaminated groundwater. The influence of two operating parameters on the Cr(VI) reduction was studied, to develop a mathematical model and optimize the process using response surface methodology (RSM). The utilized model accurately predicted the studied response, with R=0.9759, R2=0.9524 и MAE=0.06387. The analysis showed that the contact time, the initial nZVI concentration, and their interaction positively influence the Cr(VI) reduction, while the contact time-squared and the initial nZVI concentration-squared have a negative influence. The optimal reduction of Cr(VI) was achieved at a contact time of 300 min and an initial nZVI concentration of 79 mg/l.
