Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the time of origin, changes over time and the current function of older Catholic places of prayer in the open air in the Lepenička Valley. Among them are no active cemeteries, where spring and autumn masses are usually celebrated (the exception is, due to the “Saint’s” grave, the cemetery at Jelačke), but two old plague cemeteries and one cemetery that has been inactive for more than a century are being studied. The largest number of prayer sites is located next to springs and plague cemeteries, in caves and on mountain heights and summer shepherds’ residences, although there are also those that do not fall into any of the above categories. The study of the topic should be largely determined by preserved written sources, primarily church sources (monastery and parish annals, chronicles, etc.). Although such sources exist for a good part of the period studied, they contain very little information on the topic, so in some cases the only way was to rely on often uncertain folk tradition.
