Summary/Abstract: Ivan Lazarov is well-known name in Bulgarian sculpture but he was also very active social personality - as a professor and director of the State Art Academy, as member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), as founder of the Institute of Fine Arts at BAS . Numerous articles and books are dedicated to his work as a sculptor but in our art studies literature there has been no research that traces his work as a lecturer at the Art Acad-emy. The present article would like to trace, although in short, the problem about the role and influence of Ivan Lazarov as a lecturer at the State Art Academy on the art of one of his pupils – Vaska Emanuilova . The text was written in 2009 on the occasion of the exhibition at the Vaska Emanuilova Gallery The Lessons of Art . Vaska Emanuilova and Ivan Lazarov, dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Lazarov . The first part of the study, based mainly on notes which Ivan Lazarov took during the process of teaching, focuses on part of his educational programs and more concretely – on the plans for modeling, the program of the course on monumental sculpture . The second part of the article is dedicated to the stylistic and thematic ties between the art of Ivan Lazarov and his student Vaska Emanuilova . The main accent here is on the problem of the role of the teacher in creating the artistic individuality of his students . Examined are concrete works in different genres (portrait, nude and genre compositions) as well as the form and choice of material . In this way the examined in parallel works of Ivan Lazarov and Vaska Emanuilova from different periods raise a number of questions – about the creative interrelations, the closeness of ideas, about the similarities and differences in the treatment of the form and the choice of subject, but mainly – about the meaning of the mastered lessons in art .
