Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to establish an overview of the challenges and perspectives that arise from a complex multilingual system of the EU that includes 24 official languages. After a brief history of translation, we consider the current practices in the European institutions. In regard to the preparation for accession, we compare the experiences of today’s members of the Union with the candidate countries of BCMS languages. Furthermore, we analyse the data provided by the Directorate-General for Interpretation concerning the number and linguistic combinations of conference interpreters for Slovenian and Croatian, on the one hand, and Bosnian, Macedonian, Montenegrin and Serbian, on the other hand, which finally leads us to the examination of some educational perspectives.
