Summary/Abstract: The necessity of professionalization of university teacher competenciesseems self-evident. Nevertheless, teachers themselves, university authorities, andcentral-level officials primarily emphasize conducting research and scientific de-velopment. The pedagogical competencies of academic teachers are often seen asa derivative of their scientific competencies, which stems mainly from the cultureand tradition of the Humboldtian model, in which the teacher conducted researchand shared its results with students. In the era of mass education, but especially inlight of the latest research findings and concepts regarding teaching and learning ofyoung people, this model has lost its value. In this article, I address the issue of theprofessionalization of academic teacher competencies, clarifying their understand-ing and the aspects of analysis and evaluation. Subsequently, I discuss selected con-cepts: extended professionalism and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL),to illustrate the issue with an example drawn from practice.
