Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses Baron Stjepan Jovanović and his role in military and political events in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian occupation and the 1882 uprising. As the commander of the troops in Herzegovina in both events, Jovanović played a significant role both in military operations on the ground against the insurgents, and in shaping the Austro-Hungarian policy towards the newest lands of the Monarchy, at least to a limited extent, in accordance with his place in the entire system. In this paper, the author tried to summarize the previous knowledge about the Baron‘s activities and views in the indicated period, supplemented by the knowledge he came to by researching the archival materials of the Austrian State Archives in Vienna.
