Summary/Abstract: Over the past years the European Union (EU) has become an increasingly significant factor in the international relations. This is reflected in the hundreds of agreements it has concluded with third countries and international organizations, either alone or together with its Member States. These agreements form a specific part of the EU’s own legal order. The spectrum of agreements reflects the complexity of relations between the EU, its Member States and third countries and international organizations. Agreements concluded by the EU can be included in different classifications. This study is an attempt to identify the common agreement-types and the many diverse purposes for which they may be used.
