Summary/Abstract: Purpose: This study critically examines theimplications of leadership styles on employeecommitment in higher education institutions inSouth Africa, addressing the challenges posed byrapid transformation in the sector.Methodology: A systematic literature reviewapproach was adopted, synthesizing existingresearch findings from credible academic databases.Results: The study established that transformationalleadership, focusing on vision-setting and employeeempowerment, fosters trust and commitment.Conversely, transactional leadership, relying oncontingent rewards, may inhibit creativity and long-term engagement.Theoretical contribution: This review contributes tothe understanding of leadership dynamics in highereducation, particularly in the South African context,by highlighting the relationship between leadershipstyles and employee commitment.Practical implications: The findings underscore theneed for effective leadership development programsand organizational policies that cultivate staffcommitment, potentially improving the performanceof South African higher education institutions.
