Summary/Abstract: The paper is devoted to the analysis of phraseology from the cognitive perspective. Through a comparative study of Polish and French idiomatic expressions, the author searches for analogies and dissimilarities between images representing poverty in the two analyzed languages. The studied material shows that linguistic representations of poverty, present in Polish and French idioms, are similar as far as conceptualization of this phenomenon is concerned but often different in the superficial structure. Such conclusions are not without significance for translation studies. Therefore the author mentions the main problems associated with translation in the field of phraseology.
