Summary/Abstract: Afghanistan has been an independent state for exactly 100 years. But the past century has been a succession of ups and downs. The next collapse is already on the horizon. The history of the country could not be presented more succinctly than it was by an old Afghan man I met in 2006 in Kabul – Alexander the Great came and went, as did the British and the Soviets. Why shouldn't the Americans leave one day too?
