Summary/Abstract: Discussions regarding the location of the Austro-Hungarian fortress on the San River in Galicia were held between 1868–1871 in the context of preparations for war with Russia. The construction in Jarosław was to support the country’s own offensive operations, while its construction in Przemyśl gave it a defensive character. As a result of France’s defeat in the war with Germany (1870–1871), the idea of locating the fortress in Przemyśl, with exclusively defensive tasks, prevailed.
