Summary/Abstract: The Romanian ’27 Generation is primarily known for its prominent right-wing intellectuals, such as Mircea Eliade and Emil Cioran. However, it is important to note the significant left-wing faction that existed within the group, contrasting the generation’s overall conservative image. This study aims to explore these left-wing members of the ’27 Generation and their complex ideological trajectories during the politically volatile interwar period in Romania. Based on a qualitative analysis of primary sources, including memoirs, journals, and other writings of the time, the research examines how figures initially aligned with communism or socialism, like Haig Acterian and Petre Țuțea, later shifted towards far-right ideologies due to disillusionment with the Soviet Union and the rise of nationalist movements. Furthermore, it draws attention to the case of intellectuals such as Alexandru Sahia and Lucrețiu Pătrășcanu, who remained committed to leftist ideals. In addition, figures like Petre Pandrea and Petru Comarnescu are also discussed, as their intellectual journeys reflect tensions of the time. In this way, the research sheds light on the marginalized left-wing intellectuals of the ’27 Generation, whose contributions have often been overshadowed by the right-wing dominance. Their ideological journeys reflect the broader political complexities of interwar Romania, providing a more nuanced understanding of this period.
