The Complexity of Sentence Structures in Medical Communication. German in the Field of Medicine

Summary/Abstract: Medical conversation is learnt during medical studies and important skills for future doctors are acquired in the process. In the lengthy process of learning a foreign language, medical German in this case, it happens at higher levels, such as B2 or C1, that the advantages of complex language handling in concrete use must be emphasized in order to achieve linguistic progress. An analysis of clinical interviews conducted by medical students at the Medical University of Timișoara with standardized patients (actors), in Romanian but also in German, indicates the language use in realistic contexts. The quality of the doctor’s turn can influence the diagnosis, patient satisfaction and patient compliance, among other elements. The results of the study emphasize the linguistic expression habits of medical students learning German, for specific purposes, at different stages of their language acquisition. A comparison of the performance, in the case of taking a medical history in conversation with standardized patients in the foreign language, with that in the native language or even with the texts generated by the AI, allows linguistic peculiarities of those involved in the doctor-patient conversation to be highlighted. As a result, the following can be worked on in the further learning process and, thus, the linguistic performance can be nuanced and optimized.
