Summary/Abstract: Mihail Sadoveanu’s work highlights a fictional universe in which the characters follow certain social constructs. They consider their adherence to behavioural principles more important than their own opinions and feelings, which they try to hide behind a “mask”. Sometimes, however, these feelings and opinions seep through in the character’s speech and taking multiple forms, one of the fundamental ones being irony. The irony is a disguised form of impoliteness, through which the speakers sanction certain attitudes or gestures that they consider inappropriate. The speakers resort to assumptions, allusions or antiphrasis. With the help of ironic words, speakers demonstrate their critical spirit and moral uprightness, while restoring, through the use of the word with its subtext, the natural order of the world.
