Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the ideological and literary differences between Antoine Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut (1731) and Vítězslav Nezval’s play Manon Lescaut (1940) which has been written after the official outbreak of World War II, and after occupation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany. V. Nezval rewrites Prévost’s book for an audience which is very familiar with its plot (after four Czech translations of Manon Lescaut between 1921 and 1930) and intends to create a dramatic piece as act of play, which is distinct from “ordinary” or “real” life (according to Johan Huizinga); as act of play, which is not connected with social environment and collective traumas. Nezval’s rewriting of Manon Lescaut during the war refers to primary role of the play during a non-play time.
