Summary/Abstract: According to specialists, ethnoaesthetics is the way in which aesthetics is conceived within an anthropological approach. This article proposes an incursion in the field of ethnoaesthetics of the people from Gura Râului, a village of Mărginimea Sibiului (region of Transylvania), Sibiu county – where many traditions are still preserved, including the wearing of the Romanian traditional costume on Sundays and feasts – in order to discover what the word beautiful means to the people living there, which are their aesthetic criteria, in general (what a handsome man, a beautiful woman, a beautiful gate etc. mean to them), the words used to say that something is beautiful, but especially what beauty means to the villagers when it comes to their traditional costume. The costume from Gura Râului is the simplest in the area of Mărginimea Sibiului, that is why its analysis from the perspective of ethnoaesthetics – a predominantly emic perspective – is a challenge. We focus on the ethnoaesthetics of the costume elements – especially on the embroidery – we discover the beauty of the costume worn at the rites of passage, what authentic costume means, how to take care of the traditional costume, possible influences of ethnic groups on the concept of „beauty” regarding the traditional costume of Gura Râului etc.
