Summary/Abstract: This paper strives to present the results of a graduation study on place identity, that took place in a specific city – Sofia. The paper encompasses different theoretical concepts as means of understanding the different social processes that occur within the area of a specific place and that take part in the overall process of place-based identity formation. Using Bourdieu’s definitions of “capital” to determine the importance of living within that specific place, Lefebvre’s thoughts on the complex function of place and space and utilizing Kevin Lynch’s mental mapping instrument, my findings do not really establish a specific set of rules to which one could bind place identity, but rather show an individual connection with a specific place, molded by time, frequency of social interaction and quality of spatial familiarization. I try to show the complexity behind a simple and obvious expression of self-perception within an urban context.
