Summary/Abstract: Defending the Latin origin of the Romanian people and language, as well as highlighting the position held by our people within the context of the European civilization, has been a focal point of the activity of our scholars throughout the centuries. The space between the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea has represented, in the course of time, a space of transition, influenced by models taken over throughout the centuries. The Romanian people became a bridge between civilizations, the cultures and mentalities coalesced and the Romanians responded in two different ways to this phenomenon, by developing two entirely different kinds of attitudes: one of total rejection (involving a state of isolation and self-closure) and one of receptiveness – sometimes exaggerated. The XXth century added new dimensions to the process of language cultivation, as the number of scholars striving to preserve the national identity increased. The problem of maintaining our national identity by cultivating the language was regarded as highly relevant for our people and this is precisely the reason why such luminaries as Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, Mihai Eminescu, Nicolae Iorga a.o., in order to convey their views, resorted to the mass media form with the highest impact at the time: print journalism.
