Summary/Abstract: Liminality is a concept used by Arnold Van Gennep in Le Rites de Passage, where the term denotes stages, life transitions, and thresholds that an individual is conditioned to surpass to achieve a fulfilled existence. The two narrative planes of the novel Ion by Liviu Rebreanu intertwine, transforming the reading into a continuous search not only for meaning but also for connections and cognitive metaphors. The liminal moment serves to intensify both conflicts and tensions, as the characters are subjected to confrontations during these transition moments. By analyzing how the author places the characters in these stages of transition, we better understand the narrative construction and the development of themes, as well as the character construction and their relationships. Ana is in a state of liminality – after marrying Ion, she belongs to neither of them, having no place in the house of the man she loves, Glanetașu, nor in her father's house. Her birth is a liminal moment, the birth of her child is a liminal moment, as is the representation of the end of the earthly life of Avrum, Dumitru Moacăș, Ana, and Ion.Life moments are liminal, but so are moments of the day – morning or evening become liminal through the profound conflicts and disturbances that arise from these temporal thresholds. This work provides an overview of the concept of "liminality," as presented in Arnold Van Gennep's work, and a classification of rites, which we consider to be applicable to the imagery in Liviu Rebreanu's novel Ion.
