Summary/Abstract: Retail proved to be the most dynamic segment of the banking market in Romania during the last period. Statistics show that population is inclined continued to consume, even if, in many cases, the consumption takes the form of possible investments: loans for the purchase of land, property or, simply, to play at the stock exchange. Exposure of the banking system to the population has increased in recent years both in national currency and in foreign currency, the part of foreign claims on population reaching 36.99% at the end of 2008. Increase of the indebtedness of the population is for banks the most visible vulnerability. People are the sector that presents a higher currency risk in conditions in which they borrow foreign currency income and obtain incomes mainly in national currency.
