Summary/Abstract: In recent years there have been many debates about the work ethic, values, and motivation of Generation Z which has its differences in career expectations compared to previous generations. The aim of this study is to identify the impact of values on the career orientations of young people who are still in the process of education or at the beginning of their career path. The model of Schwartz (2012) is used to investigate values. Six types of career orientations are measured: entrepreneurship, job security, dedication to a cause, lifestyle, managerial competence and technical/functional competence, which are identified as leading to the modern “career without boundaries”. Values are found to be a significant predictor of career orientations towards lifestyle, managerial competence, and job security; and have limited effect on other career orientations. Values related to achievement, benevolence, and hedonism predict lifestyle career orientation, which is the leading career orientation for Generation Z. The orientation towards job security is also a determinant of young people’s attraction and retention to work and determines trends in their career development. The established relationships between values and career orientations are interpreted in terms of contemporary approaches to people management.
