Summary/Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the semantic evolution of the verb jít ‚to go‘as an analytical predicate in contemporary Czech. It hypothesizes that jít ‚to go‘ is undergoinggrammaticalization, losing its original motion-oriented meaning and acquiring modal and phasemeanings akin to auxiliary verbs. Despite this, contemporary grammatical manuals do not classifyit as such. Through corpus-based research on the Czech National Corpus, the hypothesis isexamined by analyzing the 50 most common structures of jít ‚to go‘ + infinitive, encompassing1342 concordance lines. The outcome is a catalog of these structures, elucidating the evolvingmeanings of jít ‚to go‘ (motion, modality, phase), and highlighting prevalent interpretations withinthese constructs.
