Ion Costin – unifier of the country and mayor of Chișinău

Summary/Abstract: The study highlights the complex work of the lawyer, statesman and publicist Ion Costin. It elucidates the tumultuous and determined activity of the protagonist in the cultural, political and economic renaissance of Bessarabia. Ion Costin was deeply involved in supporting activities aiming at enlightening the Bessarabian society by disseminating literature, spreading knowledge and education, writing articles through which he raises awareness of the imperative problems of Bessarabia and the Romanians people. As the mayor of Chișinău, he made investments in culture and education, organized and coordinated the implementation of important administrative and economic projects. The awareness of the importance of people’s access to information contributed to the development of the Romanian interwar mass media – press and radio. He manifested himself as a leading figure in the public life of interwar Bessarabia. The present research is based on original historical sources and specialized literature.
