Summary/Abstract: The article is about the House of Lords of the Imperial Council (Reichsrat), from 1861 the upper chamber of the Austrian (and from 1867 the Cisleithanian) parliament. After a brief description of the enshrinement of the House of Lords in the text of the February and December constitutions, the article focuses on a description of its second group of members, the so-called “virilists”. Its internal structure and the acquisition of the office of virile member of the House of Lords are described in detail. The article also deals with the difference between virilists and spiritual members of the House of Lords, who sat in the category of life members. It concludes with a general summary of the speeches made by Czech virilists on the floor of the House of Lords.
