Summary/Abstract: In the Russian Empire, various specialized state institutions were responsible for the safety of the regime and the internal order, among which the Gendarme Directorates played a central role. The actual activity of the Bessarabian Gubernial Gendarme Directorate began with the establishment on September 9, 1867 of the Regulations on the Corps of Gendarmes. Among the duties of the Directorate was the fight against various parties and socio-political movements that were clearly anti-government in nature. The Party of Socialist Revolutionaries, created on the basis of Narodnichestvo organizations, from the moment of its inception until the liquidation of the monarchy in February 1917, was the main opponent of tsarism. Built on two levels of organization, legal and illegal (the SR Combat Organization), it represented a real danger to the autocratic regime.
