Soil scientist Nikolai Dimo collection in the National Museum of History of Moldova

Summary/Abstract: The collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova contain rich material on the history of science. Among the collections of items belonging to prominent scientists, a special place is occupied by the collection of the famous Bessarabian soil scientist Nikolai Dimo, who was born in 1873 in the town of Orhei. The collection includes about 100 items and consists of photographs, documents, books from the scientist’s library, brochures, diaries, photo albums, personal items, a medal, badges, and more. It was formed in 1986-1995 on the basis of materials purchased or donated to the museum by the wife and descendants of the scientist. The purpose of our study is to publish the entire collection, including it in the catalog of objects of prominent figures of Bessarabia and the MSSR in the section of science. To do this, we have compiled a list of all the exhibits relevant to the subject, both from the main fund of the museum (FB) and from the auxiliary one (FA). The collection contains about 50 photographs, documents, medals, books. There are also a number of personal belongings of the scientist (pocket watch, camera, binoculars, etc.), as well as some household items (table lamps, grandfather clocks, etc.). The purpose of the research and publication of this collection is not only to highlight the collections of the National Museum of History of Moldova, but also to perpetuate the memory of a person who can rightfully be considered the father of modern soil science in Moldova.
