Summary/Abstract: The article characterises the rhetorical act of taming phenomena that pose a threat to health or life and arouse fear caused by the inability to cope with a dangerous situation. The analysis of statements from the time of the pandemic, which contained the verb oswajać used in various forms, allowed attention to be drawn to the semantic evolution of this lexeme, as a result of which, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, a third meaning of the verb oswajać appeared in Polish, previously unlisted in dictionaries. At the same time, the article characterises the rhetorical act as a communicative event, which requires a different research procedure than the one used in speech act theory. The application of this procedure to the act of taming confirmed the possibility of its future use in linguistic research.
