Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the functions of particles in the Croatian and Polish languages, listed in Croatian and Polish dictionaries and grammars. Concrete particles are precisely compared at different levels of grammar and pragmatics. It is concluded that particles are the 'tenth part of words' although they are expressed by known parts of words (adverbs, adverbial pronouns, exclamations, conjunctions and some verb forms), but their main function is pragmatic (emotional, modulatory and dialogical).
