Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian historiography, so far, has paid little attention to the Imperial Military School of Medicine in Istanbul. The following article aims at providing a better understanding of this Ottoman institution: by describing the process of its creation, the teachers, who taught in it, its students, as well as the structure of the curriculum itself. The article defends the thesis, that the Military School of Medicine, through it various functions assigned by the state, was an essential center for the development of modern healthcare in the Ottoman Empire. Additional attention is also paid to the reforms which took place in the Faculty of Medicine during the period in question. Apart from the functioning of the Imperial Military School of Medicine, the article also studies the Bulgarian who graduated from it. The students are categorized in four different groups with regard to their studying conditions, as well as the time period, during which they lived and studied in the Ottoman capital. In addition, the paper pays attention to the ways in which the Bulgarian students participated in the public life of the Bulgarians. By using diagrams, the article divides the students with regard to the time period, place of birth, regions from which the students originated and the professional career of the graduates from the Military School of Medicine.
