Summary/Abstract: “Black jewelryˮ in Polish culture is a special type of patriotic jewelry. Its origins are linked to mourning black worn by the inhabitants of Polish lands after a series of tragically ended patriotic demonstrations in February 1861. The period of mourning ends with the cancellation of the “national mourningˮ in November 1863. The anonymous makers of this jewelry used signs and symbols present in European culture, but created a unique iconography referring to eschatology and events from the history of the fight against the invaders.
