Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is highlighting Gadamer’s approach to understanding modern art, more specifically modern painting. Using the work of Ortega y Gasset, Dehumanization of Art, we will explain what the characteristics of modern art are and what caused its innovation, but also its unpopularity – due to the fact that modern art makes a departure from the established and accepted ways of presenting artistic content. Since it becomes distant and incomprehensible to most people, the question arises how to understand it and its different techniques and ideas. We will analyze the relationships of important aesthetic categories (imitation, expression and signs) with the new direction in art and, following Gadamer’s line of argumentation, present three philosophical viewpoints on aesthetics. These are the viewpoints of Kant, Aristotle and Pythagoras.
