Summary/Abstract: In the post-World War II Vojvodina region, an outstanding piece of Hungarian drama appeared. Ferenc Deák’s play “Áfonyák” (Blueberries) has its significance in Hungarian literature, and later, when Mihály Virág directed it, the play became a milestone, surpassing many theatrical conventions and charting new directions in the theatre scene of Jugoslavia. The three-act verse drama of Deák addresses contemporary issues and complex moral and ethical questions, all with religious undertones. The Subotica National Theatre underwent a renewal and turned towards new trends; absurd plays appeared on the repertoire. The play remained a huge critical success; it was awarded at Sterija Plays.
