Summary/Abstract: In the fall of 1943, approximately 75,000 Italian soldiers were held in stalagsin East Prussia. The two main camps: Stalag I A and Stalag I B created sub-campsthat were officially named Stalag I A Kommando Ebenrode and Stalag I B Kom-mando Prostken, respectively. The latter, designated as being situated in Prostki,Germany, was in fact located in Bogusze, Poland. This sub-camp was used in1941–1942 to detain many thousands of Red Army soldiers, Ostarbeiters and Jews. From September 1943, over 10,000 Italian soldiers that were captured in northernItaly, Greece and the Balkans were imprisoned at Stalag I B/PR. The camp condi-tions were difficult due to hunger, lack of hygiene, cold, damp, and the brutalityof the German staff. The commander of the Klam (or Klan) camp was said to becruel. Most Italians stayed in the camp for several weeks. They were deported deepinto Germany, to Silesia, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, where they performedforced labor. Prisoners were also transferred between camps and work commandosin East Prussia and the Białystok District. A small group of Italians remained atStalag I B/PR until the camp was liberated by the Red Army on 24 January 1945.About 460 Italians may be buried in the camp cemetery in Bogusze.
