Summary/Abstract: The testamentary book covering the period between 1760 and 1786 in the city archives of Baia Mare provides an excellent basis for family and emotional history analyses. The main aim of this study is to provide an insight into the lives of widows, the structure of their families and the reasons for remarriages, based on 65 testaments from the 18th century, supplemented by other archival sources. The cases in the study highlight the difficulties of widowhood, but also outline the figure of those widows who – originating usually from the world of the guilds – choose and managed to live an independent life.
