Social and cultural history of the military

Summary/Abstract: Wars, militaries and armies are a constant in the history of recent and older, world and Central European history. We can discuss it, we can disagree with it, and we can add, unfortunately, but that is (unfortunately) about all we can do about it. Military history and the history of the military, sometimes considered terminologically as distinct sub-disciplines, are quite regularly put into a separate 'ghetto', separate from 'civilian' historiography. Rather than lamenting the institutional, methodological, and ideological causes of this state of affairs, this thematic issue sets out to show the possibilities for overcoming these unproductive barriers.
