Summary/Abstract: The present study examines a series of European and national reference documents for teaching foreign languages, especially French, in Romanian pre university education, as well as several handbooks used in lower secondary schools and highschools. The main purpose of our approach is to point out the role of translation as a didactic strategy. Our conclusion is that the position of translation is paradoxical and that there is no coherent approach to this strategy in the Romanian education system. We hope that the reform of education that started more than ten years ago will find a middle ground between the traditional and the modern to the benefit of the young students of French in our country.
