Summary/Abstract: The Awakening of Árpád by Mihály Vörösmarty was premiered at the opening ceremony of the Hungarian Theatre in Pest in August 1837. According to the plot, the awakened mythical leader Árpád is confronted with the history of the local transformations that have taken place for a thousand years after his death, and, understanding the idea of the national, moral, and liberal political theatre of the time, he becomes its militant representative, saving the character of the Actress from the Furies, allegorical figures representing the enemies of the theatrical of the time. By making use of Diana Taylor’s concepts of written- and embodied culture, archive, and repertoire, the study examines the performative power and impact of the premiere, as well as subsequent 19th and 20th-century festive re-enactments and remakes of the play in Pest (1862, 1887, 1927, 1937). By considering the scenario of the play as well as the narrative, the focus is on how particular traditions have been introduced and challenged in various historical moments.
