FROM STATE FUNERALS (1903) TO THE UNVEILING OF THE STATUE (1904). THE POSTERITY OF GEORGE D. PALLADE

Summary/Abstract: We notice that the transition from state funerals to the unveiling of the statue is not only a process for the “frontline” politicians, but also for the second segment of the elites, locally and nationally influential as well. Whether we are referring to liberals or conservatives, both political families wanted a monopoly on the unveiling of statues: the narrative function of public monuments could provide future generations with tutelary figures, role models. As we have seen, the political context played a significant role in this process. The fact that the liberals were in government during 1903-1904 facilitated the bronze moulding of G. D. Pallade. Nevertheless, we conclude that the liberal politician born in Bârlad has been forgotten. Besides the destruction of the monument by the communists, Pallade had the misfortune of having no heirs to perpetuate his memory: his son, Leon G. Pallade, died at an early age on the front during the First World War. Furthermore, the family tomb at Bellu – where the politician՚s son, brother and sister were buried – no longer exists, having been reconceded to another family due to non-payment of taxes.
