Summary/Abstract: Edwin Hauswald, a professor of mechanical engineering at the PolytechnicSchool in Lwów, the only Polish technical university before World War I, played an im-portant role in the emergence and formation of the twentieth-century concept of the pro-fessional formation of engineers. This article includes a discussion of Hauswald’s viewson current and projected programmes and methods of polytechnic education. He was anadvocate of a practical and effective education of technicians, based on an experientialapproach and the autonomy of the technical disciplines in relation to the basic sciences.He drew attention to the advantages of using proven foreign solutions. The discussionconsiders his main works, published in the journal “Czasopismo techniczne”, and his ac-tivity at technicians’ congresses.
