Summary/Abstract: The Romanian literature grants a specific example of the theme of female malady and insanity as reflected in the Modernist prose of Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu. Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, a prominent figure of feminine writers, is concerned with the enigma of femininity within psychological contexts. Her work examines how characters internalize the world and their subconscious. The Romanian literary critic Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu emphasizes the author's sustained fascination with pathology. In the cycle, written between 1925 and 1935, including the novels Fecioarele despletite [The Disheveled Virgins], Concert din muzică de Bach [A Bach Concert], Drumul Ascuns [The Hidden Way] and Rădăcini [Roots] Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu focuses on a profoundly spiritual analysis of the female soul, and on unfulfilled desires and painful memories that must be left aside.
